Picking up and dropping off

The three main parking areas charge tiered half-hourly rates as a short-term airport parking option near the terminals at BOS. These are ideal for drivers dropping off or picking up passengers or parking for only a few days.

If you're collecting someone from the airport and don't need to leave your car to meet them, they can call you from the front of the terminal when they're ready, whilst you wait in the free cell phone lot just seconds away. The designated pick-up and drop-off areas are found outside the arrivals and departures levels of the terminals.

Short-term parking

The primary parking garages and lot next to the terminals offer short-term parking with a half-hourly rate and a daily maximum fee, which can be a good balance of convenience and cost if you're taking a short weekend or business trip.

Long-term parking

Economy parking provides the ideal long-term parking option for passengers going on vacation or away for more than a week; half-hourly charges still apply, but daily maximums are much lower. Placed further from the terminal buildings, the economy lot is less convenient, but features a 24-hour complimentary shuttle service, so you will only have a short wait of a few minutes to get to or from your flight.

Frequent flier options

Regular travelers through Boston Logan can also benefit from some additional services provided by the airport itself. Exit Express is a card-based system linked to your credit card for instant, contactless payment when you leave arrivals. Lexus Parking PASSport Gold is a membership program that guarantees reserved parking. Specially designated areas of the various garages and lots can be accessed with the membership card.

Off-site parking

Park and Ride at some off-site lots allow you to self-park and take a free shuttle bus to the terminal, whilst the valet services typically send a driver to meet you at the airport to park your car before you fly and return it when you get back.

You can browse and compare some of the off-site parking options currently available here at Looking4.com.

General Edward Lawrence Logan International Airport (BOS), better known as Logan Airport and sometimes branded as Massport, is one of the 20 busiest airports in the USA. Phenomenal recent growth has taken passenger numbers over 35 million a year at BOS.

Acting as a hub for Delta Air Lines and a key city for JetBlue and American Airlines, BOS serves destinations across the Americas, Europe, Asia and the Middle East. Domestic flights remain the most popular routes, with London Heathrow a notable exception; LHR is its second most popular destination overall. Flights to European cities including Paris, Dublin, Frankfurt, Reykjavik and Amsterdam are, broadly speaking, the most popular international routes.

With four passenger terminals, six runways, 94 gates and 40 airlines routing to over 100 destinations, Boston Logan makes a significant impact on the local economy. Employing 12,000 people and generating $7 billion of economic activity every year, it is the biggest and busiest airport in New England.

Location of Logan Airport

Just a four-mile (6.4-kilometer) drive from Downtown Boston on the other side of Boston Harbor, Logan Airport sits close to the I-90 and I-93 and is connected to Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Connecticut and Rhode Island. Based very close to the center of Boston, Logan Airport has a multitude of road, rail and bus routes in and out of the city.

Silver Line buses connect the airport terminals to South Station, where you can connect to the Red Line route in Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority’s (MBTA’s) subway system. Alternatively, the MBTA Blue Line runs from the center of Boston to the airport station, from which shuttle buses connect to the actual terminals.

One of the unique public transport options is the MBTA Commuter Boat service that goes from Fore River Shipyard in Quincy and Pemberton Point in Hull. It terminates at Logan Dock, where a free Massport Route 66 shuttle bus can take you to the terminals.

History of Logan Airport

Opening in 1923 as Jeffrey Field, Boston Logan was initially built by the US Army, but quickly turned to commercial passenger flights. It first served New York thanks to Colonial Air Transport in 1927 and gradually expanded its infrastructure to add more routes over the next decade.

After switching from city to state ownership in the 1940s, a period of intense development began as 1,800 acres (728.4 hectares) of landfill from Boston Harbor were reclaimed for more runway and hangar space. This was also when the airport was named after General Edward Lawrence Logan, a military officer, politician, judge and lawyer remembered as an advocate for military veterans through the American Legion.

In the 1950s, Boston Logan went transcontinental, welcomed jets and was the first American airport to establish a rapid transport connection with the local rail network. It continued to expand throughout the 1960s by adding more reclaimed land and infrastructure. As jumbo jets arrived for transatlantic flights to London in the 1970s, Terminal E opened its doors. At the time, it was the second-largest international arrivals terminal in the country and signaled the beginning of a tripling of international passengers over the next 30 years.

Constant modernization to the terminals and property, including the addition of an airport hotel, has led to traffic booming at BOS over the last few years, with numbers leaping from 29 million to 36 million passengers annually.

Airport facilities

Logan Airport has over 160 restaurants, stores and other concessions spread across 190,000 square feet (17,651.6 square meters) of terminal space, so there's plenty of choice for food, drinks and shopping there.

There's also the unusual feature of a pair of airport hotels, a Hilton immediately next to the terminals and a Hyatt a couple of minutes away at the edge of the airport site next to the harbor, which can be reached via free shuttle buses.

A team of customer service reps at Boston Logan can help you with your inquiries; just dial *23 at any payphone in the terminals or look out for the information booths near the baggage claim areas.

If you have any questions you need to ask in advance of traveling, you can call customer services on 1-800-23-LOGAN.

Boston Logan Airport hotel and parking

If you have an early-morning departure or late-night arrival, you can use one of the many hotels based nearby the airport to combine a good rest with a good deal on parking.

Stay at least one night at the hotel at the start or end of your trip and they'll let you park in the hotel lot free of charge for up to two weeks. For convenience, a free 24-hour, on-demand shuttle service is usually offered with the package as well.

Many of the familiar hotel chains at airports offer the package, such as Best Western, Comfort Inn, Holiday Inn, Ramada and Marriott, as well as some independent local hotels and motels. The independent accommodations do not offer the kind of regular shuttle services you can find at the larger branded hotels.

Top things to do in Boston Logan Airport

Enjoy top-quality airport food

Logan International offers plenty of familiar chain restaurants and coffee shops, but there are some great local flavors on offer and plenty of cuisine that goes far beyond what you might expect at an airport.

Stephanie's in Terminal B is a satellite eatery of three award-winning restaurants in the city and provides the same delicious comfort food made from fresh ingredients.

Legal Sea Foods are located in Terminals A, B and C serving up New England classics like clam chowder, whilst Vino Volo in Terminal E brings wine-tasting and charcuterie boards to airport dining.

The wild-card option is the Dine Boston Restaurant, which is pre-security in Terminal E; they have a visiting chef program bringing a different local and acclaimed chef in every three months, plus a stamped receipt gets you into the priority security lane for a quicker journey.

Explore the art program

Boston Logan's art program features a diverse range of permanent and temporary exhibits located throughout the terminal buildings.

It has an emphasis on showing work by local artists or in association with local organizations, including Design Museum Boston, Grand Circle Gallery and Haitian Artists' Assembly of Massachusetts.

Some of the previous temporary pieces have included exhibits on art and design transforming travel, a celebration of arts in Haiti and a multimedia piece on JFK, NASA and New England. Permanent displays include contemporary sculpture, murals and fascinating complex mechanical kinetic sculptures.

Reflect at the 9/11 Memorial

Many airports offer meditation rooms for reflection, but at Logan International, 2.5 acres (1 hectare) of mostly calming green space have been set aside for a 9/11 Memorial.

A cube-shaped glass sculpture remembering air crew and passengers is central to the memorial. It lights up and glows at night and is reached by two pathways winding through a green space of trees.

The setting takes you on a short journey away from the bustle of the airport before gently bringing you back to it in a reflective state of mind. The Memorial can be found next to the airport Hilton Hotel.

Relax in the spa and lounges

Travel is often stressful and airports are difficult places in which to unwind, but it’s a different story at Logan International.

The Be Relax spa in Terminals A, B and C offers a range of relaxation and beauty services including massages, aromatherapy, manicures, pedicures and facials.

Once you're finished, rather than heading straight back into the public waiting areas, consider trying one of the airline lounges, many of which offer day memberships, regardless of your airline. One upfront payment gets you access to a comfortable members-only lounge with complimentary food and drink, WiFi and various other extras like business services and workstations.

From the lounge, you can head straight to your flight feeling calm and refreshed for the journey ahead.

Get the children ready for the flight at Kidport

Traveling with young children can be hard, which is why Boston Logan international has several play areas for children in Terminals A, B and C that are full of things to occupy their minds and work off some energy.

Specially designed to include kid-sized replicas of control towers and aircraft, the Kidports are full of slides, climbing structures and TVs aimed to combine fun with some improved understanding of how airports operate.

There are also family restrooms, baby changing stations, nursing suites and rocking chairs dotted around, which are all ideal for passengers traveling with babies.

Museum of Fine Arts

Just seven miles (11.3 kilometers) from Logan Airport in the center of town is the fourth-largest museum in the USA, holding almost half a million works of art.

Boston's Museum of Fine Arts offers a comprehensive range of work from different time periods all around the world. Egyptian sculptures, American art, Chinese calligraphy, Japanese pottery and paintings by European masters including Gaugin, Renoir, Monet, Van Gogh, Cezanne, Manet and Degas are just a few of the highlights.

Fenway Park

Boston's Major League Baseball (MLB) team, the Boston Red Sox, calls Fenway Park home just six miles (9.6 kilometers) from Logan International Airport.

Steeped in history, Fenway Park is the oldest stadium in MLB, having hosted Red Sox games since 1912 alongside many other events, including football matches, soccer, hockey and music concerts.

The park is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and offers a great chance to learn about the history of baseball and the Red Sox, thanks to its in-depth guided tours.

Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum

Close to the Museum of Fine Arts in the Longwood area of the city, about seven miles (11.3 kilometers) from Boston Logan Airport, the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum is packed with an internationally renowned collection of historic and contemporary art from Europe, Asia and America.

Atmospheric architecture and design combine to echo a Venetian palace-style building, arranged around a central courtyard that’s full of plantings. This intimate setting beautifully frames the art, which includes paintings, sculptures, drawings and writings by artists like Titian, Rembrandt, Michelangelo and Botticelli. A truly breathtaking and unique museum and experience; it’s one of the lesser-known gems of cultural America.

Freedom Trail

Boston is full of buildings and places with important links to American history; the Freedom Trail, which is a 2.5-mile (four-kilometer) Downtown walk, takes you around 16 of those historic locations.

Starting at Boston Common just four miles (6.4 kilometers) from Logan Airport, the route winds to the Bunker Hill Monument in Charlestown and can be walked with or without a tour guide.

It’s a rich experience for anyone interested in American history - it features, amongst other sites, the USS Constitution, the graves of the signers of independence, the meeting house where the Boston Tea Party was organized and the site of the Boston Massacre.

Even if history isn't your biggest interest, it's a great way to see some of the city, its green spaces and its stunning architecture.

North End

A vibrant and historic neighborhood just 3.5 miles (5.6 kilometers) from Logan International, North End has been settled since the 1630s and has a strong Italian American presence.

There are endless Italian restaurants, historic buildings, bakeries, gelato and coffee shops to explore, as well as plenty of public and performing arts and summer festival feasts in which to partake.

North End is a wonderful people-watching district where you can take 30 minutes to enjoy a coffee or spend an entire day sampling the varied cuisine and culture.

Boston Public Library

About six miles (9.6 kilometers) from Logan Airport, you can find the Boston Public Library, which is the third-largest library in the USA with its 23 million items ranging from books and films to maps and manuscripts.

Set primarily in the grand architecture of the McKim Building, which is laid out like a Renaissance cloister around a central courtyard, it was designed as a “palace for the people” and is lavishly constructed and decorated.

Featuring regular exhibitions of rare books and works of art, it's a dream visit for bookworms, but also a quiet, almost cathedral-like space in which to unwind and pass some time. It’s also the spot outside which the Boston Marathon finishes every year.

Boston Public Garden

A beautiful park just five miles (eight kilometers) from Logan International Airport, Boston Public Garden is an idyllic landscape full of diverse plants and a large pond.

Swan boats on the pond have become a popular tourist attraction, vying for space with bustling populations of real swans and ducks throughout the warm months of the year. The plantings and flower beds are often replanted to a rotating schedule to ensure flowers are blooming in both spring and fall and there are many statues to be found along the various pathways.

The park has been famous since the book Make Way for Ducklings was published; a statue of the ducks in the book has become a popular place for children and adults to get a photo.

Samuel Adams Brewery

The Boston Beer Company's flagship brand, named after the founding father, Samuel Adams Brewery produces Samuel Adams Boston Lager with a traditional brewing process and dabbles with many variants of beer.

With an IPA, a light beer, aged Belgian-style beers, seasonal variants and experiments including nitrogen gas carbonation and one of the strongest commercial beers in the world (at 24 per cent abv), there's a lot of choice at Sam Adams’.

At only eight miles (12.9 kilometers) from Logan Airport, the brewery provides an engaging and entertaining tour that takes you through the brewing process and the history of the building, before ending in a beer-tasting session with tuition on how to taste and judge the quality of the samples.

Which terminal?

Logan International is arranged into four terminals, with Terminal E housing most of the international carriers and Terminals A, B and C largely accommodating American airlines like JetBlue, American, Delta, United and Southwest, which are the dominant carriers at BOS.

It can take some navigating, but there is a free shuttle service running between the terminals if you need to get from one side of the airport to the other.

If you’re connecting at the airport or having a layover, keep in mind that the post-security airside areas of the terminals are usually closed overnight, but pre-security landsides are all open 24 hours for passengers.

If you require special assistance during your time at BOS, you can find helpful directions on the official website.

How to get to Boston Logan Airport

Car

Boston Logan Airport is in the MA 02118 ZIP code area directly next to the I-90, which travels west towards Worcester and Springfield. It is just beyond a point where the I-90 intersects with the I-93 from Vermont; the airport is at exit 26 of the I-90.

The I-95 runs through all the major east-coast cities, passing through Boston from Maine to New York and intersecting with both interstates as a loop road around central Boston, so it is the typical route you will take from anywhere in the surrounding east-coast areas if you’re traveling by car.

Extensive parking options are available both on- and off-site at Boston Logan Airport, alongside taxi, limo and shared-ride services.

Bus

The Logan Express is a shuttle service connecting the various airport terminals to Downtown Boston, as well as the towns of Braintree, Framingham, Peabody and Woburn. Trips from those towns typically take about 30-45 minutes to reach Boston Logan.

BOS Airport also benefits from its central location, with many local and regional bus companies providing services to it. Boston Express Bus, C&J Bus Lines, Concord Coach Lines, Dartmouth Coach, Peter Pan Bus and Plymouth & Brockton Bus Co all serve routes to the airport, the city center and the various outlying neighborhoods, districts and towns in the Boston area. You can catch the I-93 or the Route 3 services by Boston Express Bus to reach any of the terminals at BOS.

Train

Blue Line subway trains run directly through Logan Airport MBTA station; the station is on the western edge of the airport property with shuttle buses to the terminals and connects with the rest of the subway network in Downtown Boston.

The MBTA Red Line goes to South Station in Boston, where you will be able to transfer to Route SL1 on the Silver Line to get to any terminal at Logan Airport.

Water taxi

The unconventional water taxi service is available from a dock by the Hyatt airport hotel, which is connected to the main terminal buildings by a free shuttle bus service.

Providing a quick and enjoyable way to get across the harbor from North End and the Financial District, services are provided by MBTA Harbor Express, Boston Water Taxi, Boston Harbor Cruises and Rowes Wharf Water Transport.

Useful tips

Avoid the busiest times

The busiest times at Boston Logan International are typically early morning and afternoon, so if you have any flexibility on when you fly, aim for late morning or evening. Terminal B offers a workaround if security lines are long when you're traveling; it has two main security checkpoints, but there is a lesser-known shuttle checkpoint that connects with the other post-security areas and usually has shorter lines.

Look out for weather problems

Delays at the airport are most often caused by poor weather, so be sure to check the status of the airport before embarking upon your journey so you can avoid an unnecessary wait at the airport. It’s not uncommon for flights to be canceled due to adverse winter weather.

It’s not quite 24-hour

Pre-security public areas of Logan Airport are open 24 hours a day, so you can sleep there if you experience a delay or are faced with a layover. However, few concessions are open overnight (many close before the last flights of the day) and post-security airside is shut down completely, so you can't avoid having to leave security and go back through it in the morning. As such, you'll probably get a much better rest at one of the on-site hotels or by taking a free shuttle to a nearby off-site hotel instead.

Remember how close you are to the city

Most major airports are a lengthy drive from their city center, making it difficult to leave the airport to explore during a long layover. Logan Airport, though, is so close to Downtown Boston (four miles (6.4 kilometers), in fact) that you can easily experience its culture without straying too far from BOS.

Boston Logan Airport FAQs

Where is Logan Airport?

BOS Airport is located four miles (6.4 kilometers) from the center of Boston, mostly on reclaimed land in Boston Harbor. Set on the east coast of the USA, Boston is in Massachusetts in the New England region of the north east, a little over 200 miles (321.9 kilometers) from the Canadian border and city of Montreal. Logan Airport’s terminals are set just a short way from the I-90 in East Boston, just across the harbor from Downtown, so they are easily reached via the Ted Williams Tunnel and many public transport options.

What time does Logan Airport open?

Boston Airport is open 24 hours a day, but can be very quiet overnight; airport security clears all passengers from airside back to the pre-security area airside, so everyone must renegotiate security as morning flights begin. Most shopping and many of the airport restaurants are closed overnight, so if you're flying in late, flying out early or have an all-night layover, it's usually best to make use of one of the nearby Boston Airport Hotels.

Who is Logan Airport named after?

The airport is named after General Edward Lawrence Logan, a famed Bostonian politician, lawyer and judge from the late-1800s and early-1900s. He was distinguished in his military service working up from 2nd lieutenant in 1901 to major general in charge of the 26th Division by 1923, training it as a completely Massachusetts-focused unit. He also acted as president of the National Guard Association of the United States and is remembered for his political work lobbying for military veterans and the American Legion.

Can Uber pickup at Logan Airport?

Yes, Uber and Lyft both have specified pick-up areas at Boston Logan for each terminal. Labeled and signposted as “App Ride/TNC” lots, you can find these areas on the lower arrivals level of each terminal. Drop-off locations for any passengers coming to the airport by Uber can be found on the upper departures levels.

Does Logan Airport have free WiFi?

Yes, BOS International offers complimentary WiFi across all terminals via the Boingo service; just look out for “Boingo Hotspot” in your list of networks. You’ll also find charging stations in most seating areas at the airport.

Does Logan Airport have a cell phone lot?

Yes, set your sat nav to 10 Service Road, East Boston, MA 02128 or follow the signs on approach to the airport. The cell phone lot was moved a few years ago to the intersection of Hotel Drive and Service Road; the new lot is more conveniently located for reaching all terminals in just a couple of minutes.
