Liverpool Airport guide

Liverpool John Lennon Airport (LPL) is the second-busiest hub of its kind in the north west and the UK’s 12th most popular airport overall.

Liverpool Airport mainly offers flights to destinations in Europe, but flights also leave Liverpool for destinations in Africa, North America and the Middle East.

Location of Liverpool Airport

Liverpool Airport sits on the banks of the River Mersey. It is 7.5 miles (12 kilometres) south east of Liverpool city centre and its links to major road networks make it easy to access by car.

Its closeness to the M57, M56 and M62 motorways make it accessible from most locations in the north west and its proximity to the M1, M6 and A1 motorways mean that you can get there quickly and easily from anywhere in the country.

There are no direct trains to Liverpool Airport. However, there are many buses linking LPL to train stations in Liverpool and Manchester. There are also many buses and coaches that run to LPL.

Which terminal?

There is only one terminal building in Liverpool Airport, servicing all of the airport's airlines, which include easyJet and Ryanair. Check your ticket information and the airport terminal map to find the relevant gate.

Airport hotel and parking

Book one of our partner Liverpool Airport hotels with free parking to combine a good night’s rest with leaving your vehicle parked safely for as long as you are away.

The Hampton Hilton is the only hotel within the grounds of Liverpool John Lennon Airport. It sits directly opposite the terminal and offers views of the runways. The hotel features an on-site restaurant, a bar and a ‘snack shop’ that stays open around the clock.

You also get fast, free Wi-Fi, complimentary access to the gym and a host of special offers at different times. If you’re at the Hilton for corporate travel, there’s a 24-hour business centre as well as three meeting rooms to help you catch up with work or liaise with colleagues. Useful tips

Get to the airport early

Liverpool Airport has car parks, all within easy walking distance of the LPL terminal, but it always pays to allow yourself extra time to get there. Liverpool is a major city, so traffic around it can be hectic and can result in delays – the same applies to the train lines. Give yourself at least two hours to get through traffic, check-in and security at LPL.

Avoid costly parking fines

Those who incur airport parking fines at LPL usually do so when picking up or dropping off. Bear in mind that there are ‘Red Route no stopping zones’ there, which are marked by clear red lines. It is an offence to stop in these zones and by doing so you may incur a heavy fine.

Liverpool Airport facilities

Liverpool houses the same facilities as all other major airports. You’ll find a jewellery and accessories shop, a local-style convenience store, a newsagent and a duty-free shop in the main building. If you fancy a bite to eat or drink, you can choose from fast-food restaurants, or full sit-down restaurants if you prefer.

The airport has an extensive list of parking options too, so whether you’re a disabled driver, a business traveller or you’re going on a family holiday, you’ll find all you need at Liverpool Airport.

Top things to do in Liverpool Airport

Enjoy pub grub with a modern twist

The Kissing Gate offers what it calls a “classic British pub food menu with a contemporary twist”. The restaurant serves a nice list of nibbles, drinks and full meals.

You can expect to be pleasantly surprised by both the quality of the food and its reasonable prices, as well as the friendly, helpful staff.

See the Yellow Submarine

The Yellow Submarine is very much in-keeping with the Beatles theme of the airport. The submarine statue was built by 80 apprentices from the Cammell Laird shipyard in 1984. It was originally part of a display at the International Garden Festival held in the year it was built.

The Yellow Submarine made big news when it came to the airport in 2005. It’s also one of many Beatles sculptures in Liverpool that fans come from all over the world to see and have their photograph taken with.

Gain insight into the travel industry

There are three airport tours available at LPL. The Guided Landside Airport Tour starts with a 45-minute presentation and ends with a relaxed walk around the landside facilities.

There is also a Primary School Tour for children aged between 7 and 11 and a Secondary School Tour for pupils completing a GCSE in Applied Business Studies.

Buy souvenirs “With Love from Liverpool”

You can even buy replicas of the iconic street signs around the city, such as Penny Lane and Mathew Street (the home of the legendary Cavern Club). You’ll find a huge range of souvenirs related to The Beatles, Liverpool FC and Everton FC to choose from.
