Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) is located just outside New York in New Jersey and transports around 40 million passengers a year, placing it amongst the 15 busiest airports in the USA. Alongside JFK and LaGuardia Airport, it forms the largest airport system in the country and second-largest worldwide behind that of London.

Almost 70 per cent of the passengers at Newark Airport travel on United Airlines, which bases its third-largest hub there. Around 50 other carriers also operate at EWR to provide routes to Europe, the Middle East, North America and Asia, with the most popular destination being London Heathrow (LHR).

As the first major airport established in the USA and the site of the first major airline terminal, EWR has grown to become an important part of the New Jersey state economy. It directly employs 20,000 people and contributes almost $23 billion to it every year.

Location of Newark Airport

About 15 miles (24 kilometers) due west from central Manhattan, Newark Airport is located between Newark, Elizabeth and Union, just across New Jersey Bay from Bayonne and Jersey City. Road connections from NYC are strong with the I-95 and I-78 running immediately past the airport from the Holland Tunnel, Lincoln Tunnel and George Washington Bridge.

Numerous rail and bus connections run from across the region; the Newark Liberty AirTrain shuttles between the terminals and Newark Liberty Airport Station. This is a calling point for Amtrak trains traveling between Philadelphia and New York and local NJ Transit trains running between Trenton, New York and Newark.

Bus services run from Philadelphia on Trans-Bridge Lines and go from the airport on the Newark Airport Express Bus, running to stops in Manhattan at Grand Central Station, Bryant Park and the Port Authority Bus Terminal.

History of Newark Airport

Developed on reclaimed land from the Passaic River in 1928, Newark Liberty International was the first of New York’s passenger airports and one of the world's busiest until 1939 when many airlines moved to the newly-opened LaGuardia Airport.

Utilized by the US Army for logistics operations through World War II, Newark International Airport returned to civil use in 1946 and carriers slowly returned, albeit with a primary focus on domestic routes, as international traffic went through LaGuardia and JFK.

EWR finally began to reclaim more of its early popularity in the 1970s and 1980s, as a series of new terminal buildings were constructed. Introducing non-stop flights to London and attracting routes from People Express and Virgin Atlantic, it began to challenge JFK International as New York's primary air gateway.

Between 1980 and 2000, passenger numbers leaped from 10 million to 30 million and Newark Liberty invested in a people-mover, airport parking lots and a new international arrivals facility to keep up with demand. People's Express gradually merged into United and, as they began to expand their operations at the airport, flight caps had to be introduced to limit congestion. The caps were lifted in 2009 as further development plans were outlined to expand terminals, gates and parking garages to handle over 40 million passengers a year.

Off-site parking is available at the hotels around Newark Airport, which is ideal if you're traveling from out of town or have an early-morning departure or a late-night arrival time.

Several airports located next to EWR and nearby in Newark, Elizabeth and Woodbridge Township offer convenient hotel and parking packages. They offer up to two weeks of free parking in the hotel lot to anyone spending at least one night at the hotel.

Hotels include familiar names like Ramada, Holiday Inn and Best Western, as well as local independent hotels and budget options like Motel 6. All are based just a few minutes’ drive from the airport and provide free 24-hour shuttle buses directly to and from the terminals. You will need to book in advance to take advantage of the offers, but most will allow free cancelations if your plans change.

Newark Liberty International Airport can get extremely busy in the main public areas of the terminals, but many passengers don't realize that they can escape it with a day membership at an airline lounge.

Visit Weequahic Park

Although it's based just over a mile (1.6 kilometers) from the airport terminals, you can catch the AirTrain out to the mainline Newark Liberty International Airport train station and find yourself right next to Weequahic Park.

A big favorite with locals for running and taking the kids out, Weequahic is a lush green area around a lake with a rubberized running track, golf course and fishing and picnic areas. It’s perfect to get some fresh air and stretch your legs or, indeed, to wear out children or pets traveling with you. The park entrance is just a two-minute walk from the airport train station.

Prudential Center

One of the top attractions in Newark is the multipurpose Prudential Center arena, home to the only major league sports team in the city, NHL's New Jersey Devils. There's always a packed and lively atmosphere on game days, but even if your time doesn't line up with fixtures, there's plenty more going on at the arena.

Minor league basketball team, the Seton Hall Pirates, play at the arena and there are regular special events like UFC and WWE fights. Statue of Liberty

Traveling from Liberty State Park in Jersey City, which is 11 miles (18 kilometers) from EWR Airport, the Statue of Liberty is just a few minutes away on the ferry - and it offers a fine view of the Manhattan skyline along the way.

Stood proudly on Liberty island in New York Harbor, the statue is an iconic symbol of New York, America and the ideals that bind the country together. It's quite something to stand at the bottom of the iconic statue.

Liberty Island also includes an information center, access to the crown, the pedestal and a museum, as well as beautiful views of the cityscape of New York.

Newark Museum

Just a six-mile (9.6-kilometer) drive from EWR International Airport, Newark Museum is the largest museum in New Jersey. Including a planetarium and exhibits on science, sculpture, the ancient world and children's interests, there are also regular special events and performances in the gardens behind the museum.

Some of the most extensive collections at the museum include the artwork of Hiram Powers, John Singer Sargent, Edward Hopper and Thomas Cole. The Tibetan art galleries are considered some of the best in the world, incorporating a Buddhist altar consecrated by the Dalai Lama and extensive collections from early 20th-century missionaries.

Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart

Newark enjoys some noted architecture in the Beaux-Arts and Art Deco styles, but the real stand-out is the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart. One of the USA's largest Gothic cathedrals, it is said to have as much stained glass as the Cathedral of Chartres.

Stunning in its scale and architectural detail, the cathedral is best experienced on a sunny day when the colors from the windows are at their most vibrant. The cathedral is a seven-mile (11.2-kilometer) drive from Newark Liberty International Airport.

The High Line, NYC

A 17-mile (27.3-kilometer) drive into Manhattan brings you to the High Line; a 1.5-mile (2.4-kilometer) long park built on a disused section of elevated railroad track. Running from the Meatpacking District to West Side Yard on 34th Street, development began on the High Line about a decade ago and the various plantings are now maturing and making it feel like a genuine walk-in-the-park suspended above the floor.

Free to access with various ice cream and snack vendors dotted along the route, it can get busy at weekends, especially when the weather is good, but stunning views of the city, the river and the architecture from amongst the trees make it more than worth it.

Metropolitan Museum of Art, NYC

The Metropolitan Museum of Art, affectionately known as The Met, is the largest art museum in the USA, with over two million artefacts in the collection. Ranging from modern pieces to almost every one of the European masters and the works of classical antiquity, the collection includes paintings, sculptures, musical instruments, costumes, armor, weapons and architecture.

It's the sort of place you’d need a couple of weeks to properly look around, especially as there are regular special events and exhibitions hosting visiting collections and displays. Located 20 miles (32.2 kilometers) from Newark Liberty Airport, close to the center of Manhattan Island, The Met is a must-visit if you have the time.

Empire State Building, NYC

Another truly iconic and instantly recognizable attraction, the Empire State Building is about 18 miles (29 kilometers) from Newark Liberty Airport in central Manhattan. Over 100 stories high, it was the tallest building in the world for almost 40 years and named as one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World.

The art deco styling was typical of the early 20th century and carries through into the impressive lobby area with gold-leaf murals and chandeliers. The Empire State Building’s main attractions, though, are the views; two observation decks at the 86th and 102nd floors offer incredible 360-degree views of New York City and while the queues are infamously long, you'll be glad you waited.

Ironbound

The Ironbound district of the city, which is just five miles (eight kilometers) from EWR, has a rich cultural history, but is best-known today as a Portuguese neighborhood. An incredibly vibrant area full of great nightlife, bars and cocktail lounges, the reason most people come here is for the excellent Portuguese, Spanish and Brazilian restaurants.

It’s regarded as one of the best places in the city for food (and New Yorkers love their food). There are plenty of interesting artisan shops to boot, which are filling up the old industrial buildings in a culture-defining way.

Which terminal?

Newark International Airport has three passenger terminals that are all set alongside each other in an oval pattern around the central parking garage and lots. The terminals are all connected by the free AirTrain system, which also connects to the daily parking lots and the nearby mainline Newark Liberty International Airport train station.

The terminals are loosely organized with North American carriers in Terminal A, international carriers in Terminal B and United Airlines only in Terminal C, which also offers the most extensive facilities, food and shopping.

Prepare for delays

Newark International can often be busy and chaotic and unfortunately suffers regular adverse weather conditions, which make it one of the worst airports in the country for flight delays and check-in waiting times. With relatively little to do at the airport and limited free WiFi, it's recommended that you take along some entertainment like a book to keep you occupied. If you're connecting through EWR to JFK or LaGuardia, make sure you leave at least two hours to do so.

Take care in Newark

Whilst most of Newark, particularly the tourist attractions, are safe places, the South Ward area immediately around Newark is run down and thefts are frequent. Even in the airport itself, thefts are sometimes reported by passengers sleeping in the terminals, so keep a close eye on your belongings at all times.

Try to get to Terminal C

Terminal C has had a substantial recent investment in concessions and facilities and offers far more choice for shopping and food than the other terminals. You may not be able to get the flight you need from Terminal C, but if you're spending much time at the airport, try to catch the AirTrain there to meet your food and shopping needs.

Newark Airport is about 35 miles (56.3 kilometers) from JFK International Airport in Queens. Traffic volumes can greatly affect travel times, but it can typically be driven in just over an hour. The Manhattan Midtown area is about 15 miles (24.1 kilometers) from EWR Airport; you go through Jersey City and take the Lincoln Tunnel to Manhattan. The uptown area is more like a 25-mile (40.2-kilometer) journey taking the I-95 over George Washington Bridge into Hudson Heights.

Does Newark Airport have free WiFi?

WiFi is available in Newark International Airport, but it is only free for the first 30 minutes of use; beyond that, a premium service is offered to passengers, which is at least free of commercials. Signing in is simple; just select the “Boingo Hotspot” network from your WiFi networks list.
