Memmingen Airport was once built in 1935 as a military airport for flight teaching of the German Air Force, as well as the United States Airforce in 1954/55. The airport is situated approximately 3.8 km southeast from Memmingen and 110 km west from Munich and is located in Allgäu, the landscape in south Germany, which extends from southwest Bavaria to southeast Baden-Wuerttemberg and borders Austria and Switzerland through Lake Constance. In 2002, the Allgäu Airport GmbH & Co. KG was founded and eventually in 2003, the airport was open to civil use and the flights of the German Air Force stopped.
