Halifax Stanfield International Airport parking

Halifax Stanfield Airport issues all parking bays on a first-come, first-served basis and, as a result pre-bookings, are not possible. All of the rates stated on the YHZ website include Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) at a rate of 15 per cent.

Hourly parking

The airport’s hourly parking areas are found on levels P1 and P2 of the Parkade multi-story parking lot. When inside the Parkade, look for hourly parking signs and follow directions to an appropriate space. There’s no maximum daily charge for parking in the hourly bays, making them more appropriate for short stays.

Daily parking

The Terminal Exterior Parking Lot is an outdoor area, located a short walk from the YHZ terminal. Being so close to the main building, this outdoor parking area is designed for short stays, although the daily fees and maximum weekly charges are reasonable for slightly longer stays.

The Parkade also comprises daily parking areas on levels P1, P2, P3 and P4. Find your way to one of these spots by following the daily parking signs. This parking area charges standard rates for each 30-minute and 60-minute period, while daily and weekly maximum fees are also in place. The maximum weekly rate is slighter higher in these areas than in the Terminal Exterior Parking Lot.

Long-term parking

Park'N'Fly is the long-term parking area on Barnes Drive, a few minutes’ drive from the terminal building, with a free 24-hour shuttle service on hand to take you to the main building and back. Park'N'Fly is the furthest lot from the terminal and offers stays of no less than 24 hours. Despite this, its maximum daily and weekly rates are also the lowest on-site, making it a budget-friendly place to leave your vehicle for prolonged periods.

Halifax Stanfield International Airport (YHZ) is the eighth-busiest flight hub in Canada. It handles more than 3.5 million passengers each year, most of whom hail from Halifax, mainland Nova Scotia and the nearby Maritime Provinces of New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island. YHZ provides flights to more than 30 non-stop domestic and international destinations, as well as a handful of seasonal offerings.

Location of Halifax Stanfield Airport

YHZ is located in Enfield, Nova Scotia, and is 23 miles (38 kilometers) from downtown Halifax, the provincial capital. The airport is easy to reach via the Nova Scotia Highway network, with car journeys to Halifax taking around 30 minutes and Halifax Transit-operated MetroX buses (number 320) reaching the city within an hour.

A seasonal shuttle service runs between Halifax and the airport from the start of May until the end of October, while regular shuttles are also available from the Maritime Provinces to YHZ.

There are no trains to or from Halifax Stanfield Airport itself, as the airport doesn’t have an on-site train station.

History of Halifax Stanfield Airport

Halifax International Airport first opened in September 1960, after the lack of a suitable airport in the city started to hinder the burgeoning commercial operations that were emerging in the city.

Since opening, the airport has evolved from a relatively small operation serving central Nova Scotia to a hub for flights across the Atlantic region. In 1960, the airport served 180,000 passengers but sustained expansion over the years increased passenger numbers to 1.7 million in 1980 and to 2.5 million in 1990. The airport now handles more than 3.5 million passengers every year.

An important moment in Halifax Stanfield Airport’s history occurred after the tragic events of 9/11, when it played a major role in Operation Yellow Ribbon. As part of the mission, YHZ received more than 40 aircraft in an effort to divert planes from USA airspace in the aftermath of the attacks.

In 2005, the airport was renamed Halifax Stanfield International Airport to honour the 17th Premier of Nova Scotia, Robert L. Stanfield. Five years later, YHZ marked its golden anniversary with a massive $550 million renovation program. This included the expansion of the arrivals areas and a complete overhaul of the airport taxiways and runways. The road in front of the terminal was also rebuilt to allow traffic to flow more freely on-site.

When it comes to on-site amenities, Halifax Stanfield Airport is brimming with options. Discover the marine history of Nova Scotia

The Maritime Museum of the Atlantic is small, but it is home to some fascinating exhibits documenting the marine history of the Maritime region. Halifax has a rich shipping history and its port still enriches the local economy. The city’s ships also played a huge role in one of the significant events in nautical history when the Titanic sunk on its maiden voyage.

A favourite of many visitors to the museum is the host of artefacts from the wreckage of the Titanic. Here, you’ll see historic photographs and pieces of the ship’s lavish woodwork. Most poignantly, you’ll also discover a mortuary bag and the shoes of an unnamed little girl, among many other items that bring home the true scale of the tragedy.

The Maritime Museum plays fitting tribute to the victims, as well as to the diligence and respect evident in the people of Halifax’s reaction to the disaster.

Learn the genesis of Halifax

With its distinctive star-shaped structure, the Halifax Citadel National Historic Site comprises four defensive forts, all of which have stood on the site in their current form since 1856. The Citadel’s coastal location high on top of a hill led British forces to build Halifax around it and it’s fair to say the city quite literally owes its existence to the structure.

The Citadel was the command post at Halifax as the city became one of four main naval bases for the British Empire. As the fort grew, so did the city, while its role in supplying military forces with food and other essentials helped create a thriving local economy.

Come to this popular landmark to learn more about the fort and its importance to Halifax and watch the 78th Highland Regiment in action. Listen to bagpipes and snap a selfie with one of the Highlanders before the sound of the Noon Gun signals that it’s time for lunch.

Climb aboard North America’s oldest saltwater ferry service

With its four distinctive vessels, the Halifax Harbour ferry service is very much part of everyday life in the city. In operation since 1752, the service has been running longer than any other on the North American continent.

The ferries provide a quick and cheap way to travel over the bay to Dartmouth, allowing you to see many different sites in a short space of time. During your time on the ferry, you’ll also get to take in arguably the best views of the Halifax skyline, all without spending any more than the price you paid for a single or return ticket.

Wine tasting in the Annapolis Valley

The Annapolis Valley is home to most of Nova Scotia’s world-renowned, award-winning wineries. Grape Escapes is one many companies offering wine tours to the region and their Wine & Lunch Escape gives you the chance to sample the region’s best food with the tipple of your choice.

Your guide takes you through miles of jaw-dropping scenery and you also get to visit three of the Valley’s award-winning wineries, before sampling some of the local cheeses. You can then enjoy a two-course meal with a glass of wine or beer and indulge in chocolate tasting before the drive back to your drop-off point.

Learn about local flying history while you wait for your flight

Located just over the road from Halifax Stanfield Airport, Atlantic Canada Aviation Museum offers you the chance to see a number of historical aircraft, each with its own fascinating story to tell. The Canadian Navy used the TBM Avenger as a torpedo bomber during World War II, but after its military action, the Avenger saw service as a spray plane for putting out forest fires until 1975.

The Lockheed Jetstar flew the country’s Prime Ministers on diplomatic missions across the globe. The model in which former PM, Pierre Trudeau, flew was once considered the epitome of Canadian glamour.

There’s no better way to spend your layover at YHZ than to check out key aircraft spanning the Atlantic region’s rich aviation history.

Useful tips

Don't leave your car unattended at the terminal

For the safety and security of everyone at YHZ, the airport does not permit any driver to leave their car unattended in front of the terminal. Doing so may result in a heavy fine and your car may even be towed away at your expense.

Free WiFi is available

YHZ provides free WiFi throughout the terminal building. To get online, choose the “Halifax_Airport” option from your list of available networks, open your browser, tick the box to accept the terms and conditions and click ’Continue’.

There are several children's play areas

Many airports either don’t have a children’s play area or have one hidden away in an area that’s hard to find. If you have small children, you (and they) will be pleased to know that there are a number of safe and fun play areas dotted throughout the YHZ departures lounge.

The airport gives out free storybooks to children

If you need something other than the play areas to keep your youngsters amused, look out for the friendly volunteers dressed in Nova Scotia tartan. The YHZ Tartan Team volunteers hand out copies of Emily and Jett’s Adventure to children between the ages of six and nine. This is a great way to keep the kids amused rather than restless, before or during your flight. Go to the YHZ Airport Storybook page for more information.
